Summer Orientation is an opportunity for new first year students to get vital preparation for the fall semester. You'll learn about Tulane's curriculum requirements, consult with academic advisors to register for fall classes and meet other new students. By spending a night in a residence hall, having meals in the dining hall and participating in social activities, you'll get a taste of life on campus. You will have contact with many campus services and resources and even get your student ID card made, so that you will have fewer tasks to complete once you arrive in August.
All incoming new students are strongly encouraged to register for Summer Orientation. Parents are welcome to attend as well since specialized information sessions and networking opportunities will be offered just for parents.
Each of the seven sessions can accommodate 200 students and up to 2 parents/guardians per student may stay on campus. Sessions will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. When making travel arrangements, please plan to arrive on campus before 12 noon on Day 1 and stay until 4 pm on Day 2. See the complete schedule for details.

Cost
Students: A $100 registration fee including overnight accommodation in Monroe Residence Hall and 3 meals will be charged to Accounts Receivable.
Parents: Parents choosing the option to stay on campus in Wall Residential College will pay $25 per person by either cash, check or credit card at check-in. Meals are provided to parents at no cost. Please note that we must limit on campus accommodations to 2 parents/guardians per student.
Schedule
Our schedule has events for both new students and parents. Some events are for both students and parents, together, while at other times there will be separate events with specialized information and activities for each group as described below.
Student Program
Orientation activities on the schedule for students include information sessions on core curriculum and public service requirements, course registration advice, on-campus dining and housing options and student life on campus. There will also be social activities to help you get to know other new students. Upperclass student Orientation Team Leaders (OTLs) will guide you through your sessions and answer your questions about life at Tulane. You will be assigned to an OTL’s group of 25 students for some activities, but you will have meals, socials and entertainment activities with the whole group of 200 students at your session.
Parent Program
While parents are not required to participate in Summer Orientation, they are absolutely welcome to attend. There will be information sessions, a resource expo and networking opportunities designed specifically for parents in the schedule. Last year about half of the students attending Summer Orientation came with their parent(s). If you cannot attend, don’t worry, the Office of Parent Programs has resources to keep you informed. If you aren’t already receiving them, sign-up for our monthly e-newsletters to parents.
Housing
Students are required to stay overnight in Monroe Residence Hall in double room accommodations with a roommate. Basic linens (twin sheets, pillow and 1 towel) will be furnished, but you must bring your own toiletries. You will share a room with another new student. Monroe Hall is a traditionally –styled residence hall with double rooms and common bathrooms on each floor. Accommodations are only for the night between session days (Sunday or Wednesday). No early arrivals or extended stays can be accommodated on campus.
Parents have the option to stay in Wall Residential College for $25 per person. Accommodations are suite-style with two double rooms sharing a bath. You may request a single for yourself or a double with your spouse. You will share the suite bathroom with another single person or couple. Please note that only basic linens (twin sheets, pillow and 1 towel per guest) will e provided. You must bring your own toiletries. Although the rooms in Wall Residential College have individual temperature controls, you may want to bring your own blanket if you are cold-natured. Please keep in mind that these are residence hall rooms—they will be Spartan accommodations—but at $25 per person a night, the best deal in New Orleans!

What to do/what to bring before you arrive
Before you arrive we recommend that you:
- Review the schedule of classes online to familiarize yourself with course possibilities, draft a schedule with a few options, and compile any questions for your academic advising session.
- Be sure to fax your immunization form to (504) 865-5083 one week prior to your session.
- Browse through the Division of Student Affairs website and compile any questions you have about resources and services for students and campus organizations that interest you.
- Our staff and OTLs will be happy to answer your questions when we meet you in June!
We recommend that you bring:
- Casual clothes suitable for warm and often rainy New Orleans summer weather, but a light jacket or sweater for air-conditioned spaces indoors. Trust us, rain gear is a must for typical New Orleans afternoon rainshowers.
- Toiletries. (Twin sheets, a pillow and 1 towel per person will be provided.)
- A blanket if you’re on the cold-natured side.
- An Ethernet cable if you want to use a laptop computer in your residence hall room. Although we do have wireless internet service in the common areas, there are two Ethernet ports in each room for your convenience.
- Travel directions:
If you’ll be coming from the airport, bring confirmation of your shuttle reservation or
directions for your cab driver as follows: Drop off at the Lavin-Bernick Center (“LBC”) near the
Freret Street/McAlister Drive corner on the Uptown Campus of Tulane University. Some cab
drivers know the “LBC” by its former name, the “UC” or University Center.
For driving directions, see: Directions to the Uptown Campus.
