New Student Orientation

Students at Convocation

Welcome, Class of 2025!

Held before classes begin in August, New Student Orientation is required for all incoming first-year students admitted into Newcomb-Tulane College. This mandatory program begins with Move-In Day and includes programs and activities to set you up for success inside the classroom and help you thrive in your new community. Registration is not required for this program.

New Student Orientation is designed to:

  1. Facilitate a successful transition into the Tulane University community
  2. Introduce students to the academic experience within Newcomb-Tulane College
  3. Promote academic services and campus resources to help students thrive in their first year
  4. Foster a sense of community for students as they meet members of their class and build their support network with other students, faculty, staff, and administrators
  5. Support students in developing goals and values that stress academic exploration, foster inclusion, and promote healthy behaviors
  6. Encourage exploration for involvement opportunities and community engagement experiences to assist students in exploring their interests and getting involved

New Student Orientation will help you settle in, get plugged in, and introduce you to some of Tulane’s greatest traditions.

New Student Orientation 2021 will take place Sunday, August 15 - Sunday, August 22, 2021.

How do I figure out which schedule to follow?
Residential students: Find the day you are moving into your residence hall and follow the schedule for New Arrivals that day. If you are moving in on Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday, you will follow the schedule for Students On Campus after you move in.
Commuter and transfer students: Join us on Wednesday, August 18 and follow the New Arrivals schedule for that day.
Once all students have arrived, you will follow the same schedule for August 19-22.

What can parents and family members attend?
On the day your student arrives on campus, stop by the Parent and Family Resource Fair, the Friends of the First Year Open House, and/or the Carolyn Barber Pierre Center for Intercultural Life Orientation.

What sessions are mandatory? What is optional?
On the day you arrive on campus, the Residence Hall Community Meeting, Wave Leader Meeting, Transfer Student Meeting, Commuter Student Meeting, and Welcome to the Wave are mandatory. During the move-in period, all Wave Leader Meetings are mandatory. Thursday, August 19 – Sunday, August 22, all sessions are mandatory unless otherwise indicated.

What can I do in my free time?
Check out Things To Do at TU! This list of suggested activities will help you adjust to campus and prepare for a great year ahead.

When will I know the specific locations for my meetings?
Students will receive detailed schedules for Orientation in August! If you are on campus and still not sure where to go, connect with your Wave Leader and they will help you find your way.
